My wife just got me the Kialoa Nalu paddle for Father's day. We are avid windsurfers, and I tried a friend's paddle/board last summer on a no wind day and had a blast so I've been talking about getting one this spring.
We spend all day Sunday using the paddle, with an old windsurf longboard; it didn't take too long to get the hang of it.
The old windsurfer is quite narrow and challenging to balance though. What are people using for paddle boards? Should we make the investment in a dedicated paddle board? They appear to be wider and more stable, and I assume much faster?
We have easy ocean access from a protected cove, where I usually windsurf and can ride nice 5-8 foot swell. I want to get out there and paddle it!
This is a rapidly growing and evolving sport. As a result the equipment is constantly changing.
For instance we have discovered that the surfers are preferring a smaller blade profile and as a result we produced the Kole and next year we will have an even smaller blade.
As for boards I can give you many references one of the best is Paddle Surf Hawaii
This site has some great info regarding boards and some really fun photos.
Other maufacturers include Hobe, Surf Tech, Angulo, Blaine Chambers, Ron House.
There have been some great improvement in SUP boards and as the sport is full realized I am sure there will be quite a variety of choices
I 've paddled the Pohaku from C-4 Waterman, and like the facti it has a dihedral and is avaialble in a 2 piece.. I think Kialoa need to develop the two piece technology.. maybe using a wingblade adjustment?
I have a custom stand up surf paddle that Jeff made. I think it is one of the older ones since it is mostly wood. I love it. I paddle on Big Bear lake on a sailboard mostly. Everyone who see me wants to try it out.
